Blowfish Players will represent 7 states
Columbia, SC (May 15, 2009) - Baseball won't end in Columbia after USC's final game on May 16th because
the Columbia Blowfish return to Capital City Stadium on May 27th. The
Blowfish will kick off their fourth season in the Coastal Plains League
at the "Cap" when they host the Florence RedWolves at 7:00 p.m. The
Blowfish will once again feature college baseball talent from around
the Southeast. Players from 7
states and 12 colleges and universities will represent the Capital
City. Among the South Carolina affiliated players on the team are 3
players from Columbia, and one each from Williston, Anderson, and
Summerville. 6 South Carolina colleges are represented: including
Clemson, The Citadel, College of Charleston, Anderson University, and 2
players each from Francis Marion University and Presbyterian. Among
notable Blowfish will be Clemson's Richard Mounce. The former
Blythewood High standout is batting .256 with 1 Home Run and 15 RBI's
in only 39 at-bats. The freshman is also an excellent pitcher for the
Tigers. Opponents are batting .211 against him, and his ERA is 1.69 in
5.1 innings of work. Citadel
reliever Drew Mahaffey will also play for the Blowfish. Mahaffey was
1-3 on the season in 26 appearances. He struck out 59 while only
walking 10. Opponents only hit .204 while Drew was on the mound. Coach
Tim Medlin returns for his fourth season at the helm of the Blowfish.
Coach Medlin is a Columbia native who attended USC-Salkehatchie and
Newberry College, where he played baseball. After serving as an
assistant coach at Anderson Junior College, Coach Medlin returned to
his Alma Mater, coaching the Indians for 17 years. The team will play 26 home games between May 27th and August 2nd. The current edition of the Coastal Plains league began in 1997, and Columbia joined the league in 2006. Last season, the Blowfish rallied from a slow start to make the Pettit Cup Playoffs.
