FLORENCE- Shawn Glover homered and drove in four runs, Erik Sommerville pitched four strong innings of relief, and the Columbia Blowfish salvaged the second game of a doubleheader against the Florence Red Wolves 7-3.
Sommerville (1-0) struck out six, while giving up no runs on three hits to earn the win in relief. Nick Gillung (2-1) gave up six runs in three innings, including four earned, to suffer his first loss.
Columbia (4-7) scored first for only the second time this season, putting across two runs in the first inning. Trent Still hit an RBI single to score Jim Rider, then Shawn Glover beat out a potential double play to score Matt Leeds, giving the Blowfish a 2-0 lead.
It did only took two batters for the Red Wolves (7-4) to answer, however. Cory Briggs hit a two run home run to tie the game 2-2 after one inning.
Glover provided an answer of his own in the third by hitting a three-run home run to give the Blowfish a 5-2 lead. Matt Williams also grounded into a fielder's choice to score Catlin Carter to make it 6-2.
Florence closed the gap in the bottom half of the inning after Tyler Burnett singled home Briggs to make it 6-3. In the fifth, Columbia's Matt Leeds walked with the bases loaded to plate Sean Sullivan, giving the Blowfish a 7-3 lead.
Notes: Glover's home run was his first of the season and the team's second.... Florence holds a 2-1 lead in the season series between the two teams... The loss drops Florence into a tie with Wilson for first place in the South Division...The Blowfish are off Tuesday before traveling to Hampton, VA Wednesday to take on the Peninsula Pilots.
